THE ART OF SEEING

PURPOSE: TO PRACTICE THE ART OF SEEING

Take ten photos - no more, no less; no file deletion, no selective editing. Each release of the shutter counts as one image towards your collection.

REFLECTION

I had a definite love/hate relationship with this assignment. I found it forced me to try to notice the details I might not normally see in a larger, open space. However, I also felt like I kept seeing different shots I'd like to take if I'd been able to move around. For example, the man sitting on the bench with his dog was a little too far away for me to get in a good detail shot. After I'd started my 10 photos I noticed a sign that said "No Dogs" and he was clearly sitting there with a dog. I so wanted to move around to somehow get his dog in the shot with the "No Dogs" sign and considered re-starting my 10 images, but then he moved and the shot wouldn't have been possible.

My favorite photo from this assignment is the image of the curved bench handle. The combination of the metal, grey curve, straight wood slats on the bench and speckled oyster shell ground scape is aesthetically pleasing to me for some reason. Maybe the combination of curve, linear lines and speckles?

My least favorite are the two images that include the white fence/gate. Neither is particularly well framed and they seem very blah to me.

I live in Charleston, SC and we just experienced Hurricane Ian 3 days prior to these images. The first day after the hurricane was beautiful but it has been very cloudy and colder then usual since then. I was waiting for better light to return but just went with it this morning as the assignment is due. Ideally I'd go to this location in the late afternoon or early evening for a more golden toned light. This was in the morning at around 8:00am.
